Reflection on my Writing Process

We have just finished writing our midterm assignments for The Sounds of Silence and Laughter and I thought it would be fun to write a short reflection on my writing process, because it was different than any other writing assignment in my entire academic career. The assignment was to wright either a response to one of the books that we read in class, a parody, a satire, a mock epic, or a reflection on what we have discussed in class so far. I immediately knew that I wanted to write either the parody, satire, or mock epic; and I was leaning towards the mock epic. The reason for this is because I am an improv comedy team and I thought it would a lot easier for me to write something funny than write a reflection (and yes, I see the irony in me saying that as I write a reflection). I also thought that I have written comedy before (we write weekly sketch videos) and that this should be similar in nature to the thing I already have had experience in writing. So, I chose the mock epic because I thought the style would be the funniest form, and I also thought that it would be a fun challenge as I have the least amount of familiarity with writing poetry. I also know that it may be confusing since I picked on of the comedic writings for their presumed ease and then continued to choose the most difficultly perceived one; of this logic I cannot justify. Anyways, I started to work on the epic and I decided to make it about buying girl scout cookies and because I thought it would be funny. I also thought it would be funny if I made it rhyme, but the more I wrote the more the epic turned into Dr. Seuss. Thus, the epic transformed into a parody of the great children’s author and I loved it. It was honestly my favorite writing I have ever done for a class. It was simply fun to imagine and write. I would lay in bed at night, think of a rhyme and then scurry over to my phone to write it down. I revised the whole story several times before turning it in (something I done only a handful of times in college, because I’m a bad student). I worked on this for days, which is an amount of time I have never spent on a paper. It was weird, but I was, for some unknown reason, passionate about this assignment. It was the most fun that I have ever had writing. I am honestly proud of my work and that is an all too rare feeling in my college career. So, I guess to say that if I learned anything, it would be to do something you love and do it. It is the most rewarding thing you can do.

Humor Seeker

The time has come for my final story involving uncontrollable laughter. My brother, my friend Caleb, my other friend Madeline, and I were playing a board game called Fortune Seeker one night my senior year of high school. It was late at night (I want to say about two in the morning) and everything was already funnier than it would normally be during the day. I’m not sure why, but if something is funny, then it is ten times funnier when you’re extremely tired. Anyways, there is one mechanic of the board game called hostile takeover. This means that the player who gets this can take whatever they want from another player for a small price. This happened a lot to Madeline that night. Walter, Caleb, and I just kept taking all of her stuff. Needless to say, she was not that happy by the end of the game. When the game had finished (I believe Walter ended up winning that night), Madeline went on quite a long rant about how we stole all of her stuff and destroyed all hope she had of winning....

Tyranny of the Gates

In my time as a college student I have learned many things from many classes, but the most important thing that I have learned is: Bill Gates hates me! Well, at least Microsoft Word does, but I’m pretty sure Bill Gates had something to do with that. The reasons I believe this start when I first open the Microsoft Word program and what do I behold? A default setting of Calibri font and the size is set to 11 ! Why? This is absurdity of the highest order and I refuse to continue to tolerate the madness. I have only used Times New Roman with size 12 font and every person I know uses this setting and every teacher/professor/instructor I have ever had has demanded I use this font set-up. However, Bill Gates has yet to rectify this gross injustice and therefore I can only conclude that he must hate me.             This is not the only grievance forced upon me by the...

5 Things that I've Learned this Semester

The things I’ve learned this semester:     1.) I learned how much I enjoy writing, especially when the writing is funny.     2.) I learned the power that laughter has to bring people together (the social benefits).     3.) I learned more than I ever thought I would know about Samuel Langhorne Clemens.     4.) I learned that Chancellor Boschini has a great sense of humor.     5.) I learned how to be adaptable, even when a global pandemic strikes.
